Our Story

GSPL's rich heritage dates back to the establishment of the Singapore Gas Company during the British colonial era, which was later integrated into the Public Utilities Board (PUB).

In 1995, PUB’s gas and electricity operations were corporatised under Singapore Power (now SP Group). In 2000, Singapore Power established GSPL to lead the importation of natural gas into Singapore. In 2002, Temasek became the sole shareholder of GSPL, reinforcing our position in the energy sector.

Singapore’s
Energy Story
In the early 2000s, Singapore shifted from oil to natural gas for cleaner power generation.
During this time, GSPL has been instrumental in supporting the nation’s goal to lower its carbon footprint.
In February 2001, GSPL signed a Gas Sales Agreement with Pertamina Indonesia for the supply of over 2.2 Tcf of natural gas from South Sumatra, Indonesia (the “Agreement”).
This Agreement, which evolved from a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 1998, reflects a mutually beneficial relationship that enhances both Singapore’s energy mix and Indonesia’s oil and gas development.
This Agreement, spanning over 20 years, commenced in 2003, with gas transported via a 477km high-pressure pipeline from South Sumatra to Singapore.
This pipeline was inaugurated in August 2003 by then Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and former Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
GSPL has since established itself as a leading importer of piped natural gas into Singapore.
In November 2022, we renewed our Agreement with relevant upstream parties, underscoring the strong trust and partnership built over two decades.
